About Me
My name is Nadine Franklin, I'm an artist from the US living in Japan. I graduated in 2025 from the Doctoral Program at Musashino Art University, from the practice-based research department with a focus on oil painting. I currently live and work in Nagano Prefecture.
I make collage-like paintings, usually featuring a central female figure, that incorporate inspiration from my surroundings, such as buildings, mountains and other natural scenery. Each of my works has a theme that emerges from my daily life, including specific memories and experiences, as well as internal struggles, worries, and anxieties. For example, I’ve made paintings about the time I collected shark’s teeth on the beach with my parents, how it felt to visit my childhood home for the last time, my struggle with overthinking and anxiety, and the feeling of hiking to the top of a mountain, just to name a few.
I am also very inspired by nature, especially the nature in Japan, and I often incorporate the natural scenery here into my work. I like to travel to different parts of Japan to go hiking and explore the unique parts of this country, and on these trips, I make small plein-air watercolor paintings in my travel sketchbook. These watercolor paintings not only capture the beautiful views that I see but also serve as a record of my travels and life here in Japan.
Ultimately, my art is an attempt to express and understand my own experiences, thoughts, and feelings, and hopefully connect to the viewer through them.
